Genesis 2:18 “Now the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone, I will make
a helper meet for him. And out of the ground the Lord God formed every wild beast and living
creature of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to Adam to see what he would
call them; and whatever Adam called every living creature, that was its name. And the Adam
gave names to all the livestock and to the birds of the air and to every wild beast of the field,
but for Adam there was mot found a helper meet for him. And the Lord God caused a deep
sleep to fall upon Adam, and while he slept, He took one of his ribs or a part of his side and
closed up the place with flesh. And the rib or part of his side which the Lord God had taken from
the man He built up and made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. Then Adam said
‘this (creature) is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman
because she was taken out of a man. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother
and shall become united and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh And the man
and his wife were both naked and unashamed in each others presence”
Initially, I was dwelling on the fact that this couple was totally unaware there was anything at all
unusual about being unclothed before their Creator. Eating from the “tree of the knowledge of good
and evil” seemed to have produced a ‘different perception’ than what was true and real. But thinking
about it further, there is something else going on here. Something else that affects you and I today.
There isn't any awareness of each other's nakedness. Not only did they have total freedom,
assurance and acceptance in the presence of God, but also with each other. That’s huge because
in that incomprehensible place or sphere of freedom and assurance, there is no need for the
games, the hiding, manipulation and anxiety over judgment, the burden of criticizing or the
desperate need to power over or control one another. Wow! Can you imagine a place like that?
There would be no need for “discernment!” How miserable would that be for some of us? (Don't
get upset, it was just a thought)
My husband noticed something a few verses back, (Gen 1:28) when God spoke with His man and
woman, telling them about all He’d created for them and blessing them by giving them their
purpose and meaning of life; “and God blessed them, essentially saying "It's all yours, now go on...,
Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth, and subdue it [by using all its vast resources in the service of
God and man]; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living
creature that moves upon the earth.” No where does it say that human beings were to have
dominion over one another. Control and need for over-powering one another did not come from
God, but from our rejection of Him.
Freedom in Christ is not simply freedom from our sins, but when the enormity of what God has
done on our behalf in restoring LIFE to His creation…when THAT begins to settle in…I mean really
sink into our brain and more importantly, our heart, we can begin to be totally honest about who
we are, with no masks or need to protect or defend ourself from one another. We are free to love
and be vulnerable, for we are loved and accepted beyond any human ability, so we are no longer
subject (in reality) to any human being except voluntarily, through the lens of the assurance of our
acceptance, forgiveness and the love God has for us. Hebrews 10:18-22
